Diwali 2022 – Essential tips for post-festivities

Diwali offers week-long festivities like office get-togethers, family visits, shopping for new clothes and sweets and a list of rituals. These festivities bring in a lot of joy and excitement.

On the other hand, once they are over, a few people can feel the dread of the celebrations ending and their life falling back to the mundane routine. This transition can be difficult for some; leading to post-festival blues. Others can feel exhausted after the festivities since their emotional energy has been spent attending family get together and parties.

Whether one is feeling empty or exhausted after the festivities, checking in with oneself is important. Following are some of the ways one could do so:

Take a break

It’s okay if you require some time to yourself before you resume your daily routine and work. A small break and just being by yourself can help. People who feel overwhelmed and feel the need to plan can do some thinking during their break. For others, it helps to let go and enjoy some time away.

It’s okay to indulge and savour festive foods.

Avoid being harsh on yourself and falling prey to fad diets just because you’ve indulged and have overeaten during the festivities.  It’s okay once in a while to indulge and savour festive foods.

Self – care

To unwind and reconnect with yourself by engaging in a self-care practice is helpful. Especially after being busy connecting with others during the festival celebrations. You can check what works for you and do more of it. For example, some people like to journal, others like to create art and some even feel connected through meditation.

Stay connected with your support system

Some people might feel lonely post-festivities. In such times one should reach out to their friends and family and continue the connection after the celebrations as well. This gives a sense to the individual that there isn’t an immediate “connect and then disconnect” scenario.

Look around and wander

Nature has healing properties. Allowing yourself to be with nature, embracing the winter and amusing yourself with what it has to offer can also prove to be effective when one is struggling. Taking morning walks during winter mornings can help one rejuvenate.

It is important to note that not everyone has happy times. There will be families struggling with sick patients, the loss of loved ones, and distant, conflicted relationships in the family. Showing empathy and just being present for them will help them deal with this situation.

This New Year, light the lamp of compassion and be sensitive towards yourself and others.
