Beginner’s Guide to Yoga Psychology

In June, leading up to International Day of Yoga, we at plugH aimed at driving more awareness about #YogaPsychology by sharing 21 important terms from #PatanjaliYogSutras.

We believe that the Yoga Sutras help us build a good understanding of ourselves. They empower us with methods to be able to seek guidance internally, not externally. Whether it is through self-care rituals, deep meditation or a physical practice such as Yoga Asanas – it encourages us to become ‘completely’ mindful.

The Yoga Sutras encourage us to practice gentleness and kindness towards ourselves, and by extension, to the outer world.

Therefore, over the span of 21 days, plugH brought to the world 21 interesting and important terms in Yoga psychology.

Not only did this practice help us better understand what the ancient text stands for, but it also helped us learn how to identify these concepts in our everyday lives, and go about making things better.

In these 3 weeks, we have rediscovered and refined what each of these words actually mean to us. Here’s a summary of our 21 words from Patanjali’s YogSutra’s that are the gatekeepers to the wisdom of the ancient text.

Week 1: Anushaasan, Abhyas, Maitri, Karuna, Mudita, Upeksha & Pramaad

Week 2: Chitta, Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, Aparigrah, Santosh & Swaadhyay

Week 3: Anitya, Asana, Vyadhi, Raag, Dwesha, Aalasya & Om

We hope that this was an insightful beginning to what we hope is a long and interesting journey in discovering #YogaPsychology and all it stands for.
